Aaron Carter Spoke Up About His Body Image Struggle – Here’s Why It Matters

By River Ceballos--Last week, while browsing the internet, I came across a headline that read, "Aaron Carter Explains Again Why He's So Skinny." Upon reading the article I found out that Aaron Carter suffers from a disorder called a hiatal hernia – a disorder that I also suffer from, caused by my years of living with bulimia.

But there are various reasons as to why someone can develop this painful illness. Hiatal hernias can cause lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, and very painful stomach cramps when certain foods are consumed, which often results in weight loss for a lot of sufferers.

Like every other celebrity, Aaron Carter has had to deal with his fair share of gossip in the media, but I hadn't really realized until this article how many times I'd seen people poke fun at his appearance. The media portrays him as someone who must be on drugs and they label him things like "crack head" and "junkie."

As someone who has also dealt with this, I completely understand where Aaron's coming from. I hear the pain behind statements like: "It's a terrible stress condition that affects having an appetite and I'm sorry this is the way I am; sorry, sometimes I really wish I did look better."

Hearing his words cut me like a knife; having someone publicly admit that they wish they looked different and say they're sorry that they look the way they do is really heartbreaking. I hope Aaron gets help for his condition and knows that there is an army of people out there who support him.

He isn't the only male in the industry, or in the world, who suffers from body image issues due to a medical condition. I hope everyone reading can understand what living with a debilitating condition is like and stop making assumptions/putting labels on people with a certain body type.
