5 Life Lessons from Luna Lovegood

By Grace Bradley--J.K. Rowling, the author of the beloved Harry Potter series, once described Luna Lovegood as “slightly out-of-step in many ways, but she’s the anti-Hermione. Hermione’s so logical and inflexible in so many ways and Luna is likely to believe 10 impossible things before breakfast.”

I’ve always found Luna, played by Evanna Lynch, to be such an admirable character. Her care-free attitude, optimism and individuality make her such a standout, but also relatable. Last month, Evanna opened up about her battle with an eating disorder when she was younger. In an interview, Evanna discussed how the Harry Potter books served as an escape for her during her battle, finding herself relating to Luna’s character.

In case you needed a reason to adore and admire Luna, here are some reminders and lessons Luna has taught us over the years:

She understands that the most valuable part of who people are doesn’t have to do with looks.

“Wit beyond measure is a man’s greatest treasure.”

She is extremely reassuring to her friends in their time of worry and fear.

“Don’t worry. You’re just as sane as I am.”

She is optimistic and open to the unknown.

“My mum always said things we lose have a way of coming back to us in the end. If not always in the way we expect.”

She sees that some things in this world don’t have a clear answer, and that is okay.

“I think the answer is that a circle has no beginning.”

She’s not afraid to take a stance and speak her mind.

“I think we ought to say something.”

One of Luna’s most admirable characteristics is that she is unapologetically herself, which is not always easy to accomplish. Evanna said that Luna’s oddball characteristics mixed with confidence is what attracted her to the character initially.

Luna embraces the qualities that make her unique, and you should too. It’s okay to be different and, most importantly, it’s okay to be you.
