5 Body-Positive Celebrity Quotes to Stick on Your Wall

By Kaitlin Irwin--The popular media would like us to believe that celebs are #perfect. Even though it may seem that way, they’re quite similar to you and me. Believe it or not, they too feel pressure to fit a certain mold, and more and more celebs are starting to take a stand against it. Here are five body-positive statements from celebrities that will brighten your day and fill you with appreciation for your body!

“One day I had to sit down with myself and decide that I loved myself no matter what my body looked like and what other people thought about my body. I got tired of hating myself.” -Gabourey Sidibe

Thank you, Gabourey Sidibe, for opening up and being strong enough to stop hating yourself and start loving yourself. Sidibe is an accomplished and admired actress, and she doesn’t fit the standard body ideal that society has created. Yet she is beautiful inside and out, and this quote reminds us of that. Nothing is as beautiful as when a woman decides to love and appreciate herself!

"I keep telling myself that I'm a human being, an imperfect human who's not made to look like a doll, and that who I am as a person is more important than whether at that moment I have a nice figure." -Emma Watson

While Emma Watson is pretty much all-around fabulous, she makes a great point with this quote. There are days when celebrities don’t look their best. Just like us, they have those days where they don’t feel like putting effort into their appearance, and that’s okay! We will all have those days of feeling unattractive or that we don’t measure up, but that’s the reality of being human. We are all imperfect, even those who seem to have it all together. Furthermore, character will always be a better indicator of a person than their appearance.

"My smile is my favorite part of my body. I think a smile can make your whole body. I want women to know that it's ok. That you can be whatever size you are and be beautiful inside and out." -Serena Williams

I just love that Serena Williams is focusing on her body in a way that isn’t related to body type or size. As a professional athlete, Serena has a strong and muscular body, and she has faced criticism for not looking “feminine.” By accepting her body and celebrating all of the magnificent feats it can accomplish, she successfully silences any critics. This quote reminds me to put a smile on, because it really can make your whole body (and day!).

"God made a very obvious choice when he made me voluptuous; why would I go against what he decided for me? My limbs work, so I'm not going to complain about the way my body is shaped." -Drew Barrymore

First of all, I totally agree with Drew on this one. As a person of faith, I believe that God made no mistakes when he crafted each of us. Hating a part of my body felt like me hating something that God made for me. Secondly, Drew’s quote gives me a serious reality check. I was born healthy, with fully functioning arms, legs, organs and so on! Am I really going to get down on myself because I don’t have some “perfect” body? No way!

"I believe it is important to go on insisting that normality is not what we are exposed to. Honestly, among my acquaintances there is no woman wearing XS. No, sorry, there is one: my daughter. The point is that Mia is 11 years old." -Kate Winslet

Just a disclaimer: there is nothing wrong if you are naturally a small size. The reality is that most women aren’t, but naturally-thin girls are just as beautiful and worth just as much love as curvier girls are. I remember during my recovery journey when I would compare the size of my body and even what I ate to that of a 9-year-old boy. Really?! Everyone’s needs are different, and health will look different on everyone. The media shows us just one type of body, but we know better than that!

Celebrities may seem to have the perfect lifestyle, stunning good looks and all of the talent. The truth is, however, that they are imperfect people just like you and me. They are filled with hopes and dreams, successes and failures, fears and regrets. It can be easy to think they are always super-confident, but they have their “off” days too. Hopefully, these body-positive quotes will remind you that no one is perfect, no one looks the same and no one has it all together. But we can all stick together and lift each other up.
