Hello, My niece has not been eating for about six months...She recently changed psychologists as she turned 19 and so could not see the child psychologist any longer. Now, after 2 sessions with the new psychologist ( once every 2weeks they meet) she is planning to stop seeing anyone as it seems hopeless and like it is not helping. She has been through so much in the last 3 years. I am very worried, naturally. We used to be able to talk about stuff easily but recently she seems angry. I want so much to help but I don't know where to go from here. Do you have any advice?
@Susono: Thanks for submitting your Ask a Psychologist question. We are putting together a list of questions, which will be answered in a regular feature on the site. In the meantime, I wanted to reach out and offer a few resources to you. I know it must be very frightening--and frustrating--to see your niece struggling with her eating disorder. It's so important for family members to have a good support system in place so that they can get the information, guidance, and the space to take care of themselves throughout this difficult process. You can always call our helpline if you want to talk to someone--1-800-931-2237. Hi Amity, Thanks for posting your question. It has been submitted for a response from one of our experts! In the meantime, I just want to say that I can relate. As a student, I struggled a lot with the pressure to achieve and the feeling that I had to be "perfect" would overwhelm me a lot. That stress actually made it more difficult for me to be productive and focused. I procrastinated all the time too. I don't know if that's what you're going through, but remember to give yourself a break and take time to do things for yourself that relieve stress. And if perfectionism is an issue for you, remember that it's always ok to ask for help.
If you need a referral or support now, you can call the NEDA helpline at (800) 931-2237.
